The Buckeye Vanguard Description
This long-awaited publication chronicles the stories of the 1,552 men who served in the regiment during four years of war. From their departure from Tiffin to the cheers of fellow citizens to lonely marches in unknown territory in the South, they experienced moments of triumph at Shiloh and Chattanooga to bitter defeats at Stone River and Pickett's Mill. Follow their footsteps as they march through Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Louisiana, and even Texas, concluding as the boys, now men, went home after the war and continued their comradeship with yearly reunions until there were too few left to reunite.
The last Forty-ninth soldier, James Fredricks, Company I, passed away in 1940. Through more than four years of hardship, battle, death, and disease, the Forty-ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry did what so many regiments in the Union army also accomplished--their duty.
Nearly 100 photos of the soldiers, of all ranks are included--many never before published -- and information gleaned from the personal diaries of many more can be found within these pages.
