Family History Research: Civil War
Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Ohio History Center Archives/Library
Are you interested in how to research the experience of an Ohio soldier during the Civil War? Are you having difficulty identifying records of military service during this conflict? This presentation will focus on the three main types of war records: entry records (muster in rolls, draft records), service records (units soldiers served in, muster out rolls) and post war records (pension indexes and files, discharge records). We will also discuss the Ohio Adjutant General records, manuscript collections and books available at the Ohio History Center's Research Room that can be useful in finding your soldiers and their service information. You will learn tips on how to locate names of soldiers who answered the call of President Lincoln and how Ohio filled and overfilled its quota almost every time such a call went out. We will also discuss county records (Recorders Office discharge records), county histories, and how to find out where veterans are buried.
Cost: $15.00 OHS/FCGHS members, $20.00 non members
